What factors affect painting costs?
The three main driving factors when it comes to painting costs are size of project, scope of work, and prep work required.

While size of project might be obvious, it can also include complexity, such as exterior houses having steep roofs, dormers, or graded landscaping. Scope of work is driven by what is being repainted, such as trim and walls, or ceilings and baseboard. Lastly, prep work can be what is being done to the surface being painted, or it can revolve around what needs to be adjacent surfaces need to be protected.
How can I save money when hiring painters?
There are a number of things that homeowners can do to save money on painting. They involve reducing scope of work, electing a simpler surface prep package, taking on a portion of the prep, and scheduling.

Reduce Scope of Work: limit not only the amount of rooms being painted, but the surfaces as well.

Simple Surface Prep: ask painters to only repair holes and gaps in surfaces

DIY Protection Prep: move furniture and belongings, take off outlet covers, curtains, window treatments, etc., and plastic/paper off floor and furniture.

In the end, prep is rougly 50-70% of the project, so the more you can do, the lower the cost will be.

Make sure to communicate this during official estimate to unlock cost savings with your salesperson.

Scheduling: ask your painter, "do you have any scheduling discounts?". Most Michigan -based painting companies have lulls in their calendar due to weather, project timelines moving, hiring more painters, etc. Many companies will gladly provide a 5-10% discount in order to optimize their scheduling.
